Ashwini Ponnappa partnering Jwala Gutta created history at the World Championships at Wembley on 12th August. She and partner became the first players after Prakash Padukone to reach the World Championship semi-finals. Prakash had reached the Men’s Singles semis in 1988.
To achieve this remarkable bronze medal finish, Ashwini & Jwala beat – Eva Lee & Paula Lynn Obanana (US) 21-9, 21-18; Wen Hsing Cheng & Yu Chin Chien (TPE) [2seeds] 21-18, 21-18; Lok Yan Poon & Ying Tsuet Tse (HK) [11] 19-21, 21-17, 21-19 & Nadya Melati & Vita Marissa (INA) 17-21, 21-10, 21-17.
In the semis they fought tooth and nail against the superior might of Quing Tian & Yunlei Zhao (CHN) and were beaten 14-21, 16-21 in 38 minutes. Now ranked 21, Ashwini and Jwala are sure to find themselves well within the top 16 in the world when new rankings will be released on 18th August.
